The music of 2009

Each year I discover several new CDs that I like. Over the course of the year certain playlists rise to the top - songs that I listen to over and over. Songs that seem to reach into my soul and pull out all sorts of personal responses. For instance, 2007 was the year of Rocco Deluca. Soul. Dobro. Listening brought out feelings of freedom and abandon that seldom hit me so strongly. Then, 2008 was, for me, the year of the singer/songwriter. Shawn Mullins wrote of experiences that would never be mine. But still touched a chord in me. And Brandi Carlisle wrote of experiences that were mine. "Have you ever stared into a starry sky?... Have you ever been out walking in the snow... If you've ever been out walking you would know." "All of these lines across my face tell you the story of who I am." Cool album. Check it out. And the Punch Brothers Concert may have been the highlight...

But I wonder what songs of 2009 will rise to the top. Have you heard the Seldom Seen Kid by Elbow (out in 2008, but I just discovered them thisyear)? Will U2 finally release a new album? Doesn't Rocco D have something in the works? I'm looking forward to finding out.
